NUTMEG SOAP FAIR TRADE GIFT

Grenada, the Isle of Spice, is the world's second largest producer of nutmeg, with an annual production of some 6.7 million lbs. The nutmeg tree originates in Indonesia, and was probably introduced to the West Indies by sailing ships in the 1800s.

The nutmeg tree(Myristica fragrans) is a tropical evergreen with glossy deep green leaves. The fruit consists of an outer pericarp, resembling an apricot, which is used to make nutmeg jam, jelly and syrup. When the fruit is ripe, it splits open, revealing a shiny, dark brown nut surrounded by a bright vermilion covering, which is also a spice called mace. The dark brown shell cracks easily and contains the nutmeg kernel.

Despite being used as a spicy addition to to foods and beverages, nutmeg and it's oil are used extensively for remedies against colds, joint and muscle pains.
